May 2011

Dear Friend of Pendle Hill,

One of the questions a new clerk of a board is often asked is why he chose to take on the responsibility that goes with such a role.  I did not take lightly the role and responsibility of clerking the Quaker study and retreat center we know as Pendle Hill at this time in its life.

First, Pendle Hill was conceived as “…a haven of rest, school for prophets, laboratory of ideas, and fellowship of cooperation.”  It is the product of the vision of people who were persistent, who were willing to make personal sacrifices, and who had faith that Pendle Hill would succeed where others had failed.  Second, as I interact with the staff members and volunteers who serve Pendle Hill today, I believe that the spirit that gave birth to Pendle Hill lives among us today.  And, third, I believe that working for peace, justice, and spiritual renewal is just as critical today, and perhaps more so, than it was when Pendle Hill was founded during the “Great Depression.”

As we seek to move Pendle Hill forward in these challenging economic times, I hope you will join me in supporting Pendle Hill through financial contributions, if you are able at this time, as well as through your prayers and good will.  To encourage people who have benefited from Pendle Hill to become donors, several of our supporters have made a special contribution, one that will make your dollars go farther. They have pledged $25,000 to match new and previous donors dollar for dollar to help us reach our gift income goals by August 31.

Each fiscal year, gift income is a vital part of the revenue we need to keep Pendle Hill operating. Like other schools and retreat centers, our fees cover only a portion of our operating costs.  About 50 percent comes from current donations or income from endowment and bequest gifts.

Please consider giving $25, $50, $100, or whatever you can.  Our challenge grant will double your gift so we can continue the good work of Pendle Hill.

In Peace,
Signed, Clinton Pettus Clinton Pettus
