Arts, Crafts and Woodworking

Arts and Spirituality

Invite the artist in you to awaken and flourish during your time at Pendle Hill. Explorations in the arts – with clay, paint, handmade paper, and more – provide a deepening experience for the soul which is beyond words.

Many students, including those with little experience with visual art, find the studio to be a “home” where they can reconnect with God and claim their own creative path. The studio space and supplies are available to everyone at Pendle Hill, and spontaneous and collaborative art projects are welcome. Simple, contemplative art activities and organized craft projects are provided.  Some students come with ideas for pursuing self-directed art projects in their free time.

Termlong art courses offer opportunities for in-depth exploration within a supportive group environment.  Class assignments are designed not only to build particular skills but also to promote spiritual growth and self-reflection.

The gallery space in the Barn holds changing exhibits featuring artists whose work often reflects themes of spirituality, peace, and justice.  Throughout the year our life together is enriched by other arts events and activities, such as the Pendle Hill Chorus, evenings of chanting or Taizé-style worship, public concerts, and theatrical performances.

Woodworking

Pendle Hill has a well equipped woodshop. For more than ten years staff, students, and volunteers have been restoring the furniture which adorns many resident rooms.  Furniture restoration provides an opportunity to conserve, use and acquire skills, and give old pieces a new life. Restoration is part of the Wednesday work morning program, and every Monday night there is open shop where resident students can pursue creative wood projects, such as making boxes, carving sculptures, or other projects.
