Margaret Cary (1881-1968) drafted “Are Your Meetings Held in the Life” for presentation to the women’s problem group of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. She wanted to help the men and women of that Yearly Meeting, which had recently reunited its business sessions, adapt to the rigors of twentieth century family life. She sought to find space for women, young Friends and new parents within the conferences, worship groups and meetings in the Quaker world. Margaret Cary served as president of the Alumnae Association of Bryn Mawr, having graduated from the college in 1908. She took her own obligations so seriously that her own young son once disappeared from the house for several hours, only to be found several blocks away heading for what he called a “mitty meeting” (a committee meeting). Margaret Cary was a serious entomologist; her collection of moths is now a part of Yale University’s Peabody Museum.
