What are the factors that make debt oppressive? What are models and opportunities for liberation?

What others aspects of money, economy, and financial systems breed oppression and call out for liberation?

What are the spiritual consequences of being ensnared in a debt-based consumer culture?

How do the connections between debt and interest play themselves out in our world—in the relentless demand for an ever-expanding economy, in the growing gap between rich and poor, in the pressures on our finite and vulnerable biosphere?

How can we be part of an effort to lift the burden of debt from ourselves and others? On the other hand, how can we approach interest with integrity?

How can our testimonies be made real in the world of money, economy, and finance? Where is the solid ground on which we can stand and from which we can reach out?

Leader(s)

As a student of economics since childhood, Pamela Haines has spent a lifetime gathering experience, knowledge and perspective—with families, childcare workers, social activists, Quakers, Ugandans, urban farmers in Philadelphia—to speak with authority on how economic theories and structures shape our lives and challenge our deepest values.

As lead author of Toward a Right Relationship with Finance: Interest, Debt, Growth and Security as well as two Pendle Hill pamphlets (PHP #420 and PHP #450), a workshop leader, and a speaker, her common theme is demystifying connections between economics and daily life while challenging people to claim their power and act on their values. Pamela’s most recent Pendle Hill pamphlet is Money and Soul (2018).
