“God’s Invitation to Creative Play” (PHP #468)

Begin the New Year with creative renewal! Experience creative playfulness, childlike wonder, and visual prayer in this experiential and restorative retreat. We will create ourselves anew while deepening our sense of connection to God and to one another. Together we will explore, learn, listen, discern, create, reflect, pray, and share in wonder. All are welcome. No particular artistic/creative experience or skills are required. A cleared space to work, and a computer, tablet, or phone with a webcam/camera are recommended for this online retreat.

Recommended Supplies:

  • 1-3 sheets of cardstock, watercolor paper, or other thicker drawing paper (4”x6” to 8”x10”)
  • 5-10 sheets of drawing or watercolor paper (9”x12” to 12”x16”)
  • 1-2 large sheets of watercolor or drawing paper (16”x20” to 20”x24”)
  • colored pencils, crayons, markers and/or pastels
  • a favorite pen/pencil
  • a journal or writing paper
  • a pair of scissors

Optional Supplies:

  • watercolor painting supplies
  • any other creative supplies you’d like, such as:
    • visual arts tools
    • musical instruments
    • other creative items of your choosing


Jesse White is a narrative expressionist artist and writer. She is the author of Pendle Hill Pamphlet #468, God’s Invitation to Creative Play. Her vocational background is in teaching and in expressive arts therapy. Jesse served as the Arts and Spirituality Coordinator for Pendle Hill from 2013-2020 and currently serves as the Director and Spiritual Arts Doula for Pigeon Arts, a cathartic art-making organization. She also currently serves as Clerk of Frankford Monthly Meeting of Friends (PA), and she serves on the Board of the Fellowship of Quakers in the Arts.
