White supremacy, sexual and domestic violence, substance abuse, class anxieties, mental illness, family disruptions, and other crises are at once a call to Friends’ prophetic voice to the world and common in the lives of people we love; yet Friends rarely have prepared pastoral care practices that acknowledge and labor with these crises when they are internal to our communities. Our communities offer a promise of love, often like a family, but how are we prepared for our role as ministers in each other’s lives? Where does the prophetic and the pastoral meet in our spiritual lives?

Building off June’s First Monday lecture with 2020 Cadbury Scholar Windy Cooler (click the link to watch the video), this healing, playful, and grounding workshop will use Quaker theology and Friends’ own experience to empower participants in creating, as a cohort, strategies for pastoral care responses they can use right away and far into the future. Together, participants will create a plan to address a specific pastoral care need in each of their communities and in December share the results of their labor in a supportive and collegial circle of peer ministers.

Windy Cooler (M.Div) is a member of Sandy Spring Monthly Meeting, Baltimore Yearly Meeting. As an embraced public Friend she has traveled the country since 2018 as a pastoral care researcher and educator.
