The Sankofa Path online workshop provides an opportunity for folks who self-identify as US-Born African-American/Black Women to uncover what effects of intergenerational trauma might be lingering in our bodies, minds, and spirits and to begin the deep healing necessary to reclaim all aspects of our radiance.

As descendants of captured and enslaved Africans, we Black and brown folks in the United States have had – and continue to have – particular issues and obstacles in our lives based on the traumas of racism. The wounds of our own experiences and those of our ancestors’ experiences continue to live in us. Effects can manifest emotionally, physically, intellectually, and spiritually – sometimes subtly and sometimes more obviously.

The study of this phenomenon is called epigenetics, and many researchers and therapists are currently focusing on the effects within the US-born African-American community; this workshop is a part of that thread.

The Sankofa Path

The workshop is twofold; there will be a focus on personal healing work in the sessions themselves, as well as building personal and collective skills to draw on at any time.

The Sankofa Path workshop provides an opportunity to begin the deep healing necessary to reclaim all aspects of our radiance. Sankofa means “to retrieve” in the Twi language of Ghana; we use the image of the Sankofa bird, looking over its shoulder to the past, because of the importance of looking back to move forward.
