Synopsis

This pamphlet is a personal history of Rick Thompson, who worked for the American Friends Service Committee in Vietnam during the war, and who is one of the few Quakers to have died there. The author uncovers his journey of conscience as it led to pacifism and then compelled him to help in relief efforts in Vietnam during the war.

About the Author(s)

Beth Taylor is a Senior Lecturer in the Expository Writing Program in the English Department at Brown University, where she received her Ph.D. and now teaches creative nonfiction. A former writer for The Providence Journal Sunday Magazine and preceptor in Harvard’s Expository Writing Program, she wrote her Pendle Hill pamphlet as part of a series published recently in the Friends Journal, the journal War, Literature, and the Arts, the web site, “Writing Vietnam,” and the anthology, Friends and the Vietnam War. She lives in Providence, Rhode Island, with her husband and three sons.
