A Word About Online Learning

As enriching as educational residencies at Pendle Hill are, we have found that adding online learning to our long-term education programs makes our offerings more accessible and a greater benefit to the participants’ local communities. Both research and our own experience also make it clear that such hybrid programs can be powerful, collaborative, and transformative experiences for the participants.

Still, research also suggests that students are more likely to be successful learners in a hybrid online/face-to-face program like ours if they are:

  • Self-motivated and self-disciplined;
  • Open to the idea that high-quality learning can actually take place outside of a traditional classroom;
  • Able to understand that online learning is educationally challenging and worthy of hard work;
  • Open-minded about sharing personal life, work, and educational experiences with others as part of the learning process;
  • Able to communicate reasonably well through writing;
  • Willing to “speak up” if problems arise;
  • Willing and able to commit real time and attention to their online work each week;
  • Able to think ideas through before responding–and to clean up confusing wording and mechanics before hitting the send button; and
  • Comfortable with the computer hardware and software needed to participate in the program.

So, which of these characteristics are already true of you? What might you have to work on to be successful and satisfied in this program? What kind of support would you need?
