Synopsis
Jen Elam writes about her childhood and identity as a rural Appalachian. She discovered she was a “hillbilly” when she left the region and details the discrimination and misunderstandings she has encountered outside of Appalachia. Highlighting the stereotypes and sensationalized reporting on the poverty that continues to plague the region, the author calls on Friends to better live our testimony of equality with regard to Appalachia.
