Synopsis
Essays in Quaker History consists of seven illustrated scholarly essays by British author David Rubinstein with a foreword by David Boulton. The chapters are divided into three sections as follows:
- Beginnings and Progress: Hampstead Quakers 1907-1914; Yorkshire Friends in an historical perspective;
- Modern Warfare 1899-1945: Friends in War; Quakers and the Great War 1914-15; the Rowntree Family and War 1914-1918; and
- Personalities: James Backhouse 1794-1869 – nurseryman, botanist, missionary; and Edna Annie Crichton 1876-1970 – first woman Lord Mayor of York.
