About the Author(s)
Hugh Barbour was born in China in 1921 and attended Harvard University, from which he graduated in 1942. He went on to Yale Divinity School, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1952. While at Yale, he worked as a Congregational Minister in Coventry, Connecticut. After receiving his Ph.D., Hugh Barbour taught at Syracuse University, then moved on to Wellesley College in 1950, and finally settled at Earlham College in 1953. He served on the faculty of Earlham College for the remainder of his career and also taught at the Earlham School of Religion. He was active with the Quaker Theological Discussion Group, the Association of Asian Studies and the American Society of Church Historians. He contributed to the publication of at least forty-seven books during his career. Since retiring from Earlham, he has continued to write. He now lives at Kendal on Hudson, a Quaker retirement community in upstate New York.
