Towards a Just Democracy: Spiritual Grounding and Principled Action

On Election Day eve, join two Friends working at the intersection of Quaker faith and U.S. policy for a conversation on how to equip ourselves – spiritually, intellectually, and politically – for whatever comes in the days and weeks ahead. Recognizing where our country is, and the gap to where we want it to be, we will discuss opportunities to make our democracy more just and sustainable, and how to tend to our spiritual center while we do this necessary work.

Thanks to the generous support of the Friends Foundation for the Aging, we’re able to make this and other free, online programs accessible to f/Friends of all ages.

Alicia McBride (she/her) serves as FCNL’s senior director for Quaker leadership, where she focuses on connecting Quaker faith, practice, and community to policy advocacy in Washington, DC. Her various roles and more than 20 years of work at FCNL are united by a concern for how to act with integrity at the place where faith and the world meet. She is a member of Sandy Spring Friends Meeting (Baltimore Yearly Meeting), assistant clerk of the Earlham School of Religion Board of Advisors, a parent to two teenagers with her husband Sam Garman, and a yoga teacher.

José Santos Moreno is the Director for Justice Reform at FCNL. He seeks to make structures in the U.S. more just and less oppressive by eliminating gun violence, reducing mass incarceration, and building a truly equitable democracy. He has 13 years of policy experience and three years as a social worker giving him a full grasp of how much work there is to do.

José is working on his fourth language, as he is trilingual. He does not like to admit it, but his wife De’Jonnae is funnier than him. He is a sneakerhead and a spotty runner working on his first marathon. He is in the process of transferring his membership to Homewood Friends Meeting (Baltimore Yearly Meeting), has been a foster parent to 11 children, and fosters a one-year-old currently.
