Synopsis

A Method of Prayer is a rediscovered writing of Johannes Kelpius, a recluse of German pietist background who spent time in isolation in a cave in Wissahickon Valley Park – to that end he was known locally as the “mystic of Wissahickon.” This rewarding read mirrors concepts addressed by Madame Guyon, a French mystic, and ideals of Catholic meditative prayer fostered by the likes of Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross. Its emphasis on union with God through inner prayer are more Catholic in nature than views of the Protestant separatists of Kelpius’s day who advocated vocal prayer.

This pocket-sized devotional is a companion volume to The Cloud of Unknowing and A Guide to True Peace, “Books of the Little Gold-Jacketed Series” published in association with Pendle Hill by Harper & Brothers (New York and London).
