ARTIST STATEMENT

My work speaks through elements of the natural and manmade world. Sensual and visually tactile, the work contains references to internal and external, psychological and sociological experience. I work with metals, wood, stone, found objects, paper, ink, charcoal, and graphite.

In this exhibit I feature bird and insect drawings, and boat sculptures. The drawings reflect a current and pervasive sense of dislocation. The sculptures reflect themes of migration and weave together fact and mythology in an attempt to reflect our consciousness, experience, and history. I build then strip away all but what is essential. My exploration is expressive and intimate. In my pure, unvarnished approach to materials and subject matter, there is power imbued with sensitivity. ~ Monica Kane
